Valley takes the San Fernando Valley in California as a landscape where geological form meets the planned geometry of roads, plots and settlement.

My fascination with Los Angeles grew through moving across the city on foot and public transport: encountering its heat, distances and vast infrastructures at street level, while becoming increasingly drawn to the strange order they produce when seen from above.

In the studio, I translate this tension between lived experience and mapped order into thin washes of acrylic paint on paper, allowing pigment to pool, separate, desiccate and stain. Between layers I laser engrave mapped structures into the surface. Each process partly exposes and partly extinguishes the other: orderly grids become scars and fragments, while painted fields begin to resemble weather, terrain or geological events.

The series develops techniques first explored in Amargosa Valley, shifting from the circular geometries of desert agriculture and extraction towards the squares, subdivisions and infrastructural networks of metropolitan land. Across the works, the map is never stable. It is submerged, re-emerges and breaks apart.
